Blue Sapphire (Neelam)
Blue Sapphire, associated with the planet Saturn (Shani), is one of the most powerful and fast-acting gemstones in Vedic astrology. Known as Neelam, it belongs to the corundum family and derives its blue color from trace elements of iron and titanium. The most legendary blue sapphires come from Kashmir, prized for their velvety cornflower blue—though these historic mines are now virtually exhausted, making Kashmir sapphires exceptionally rare and valuable. Sri Lanka (Ceylon) produces bright, lively blue sapphires with excellent transparency, while Burma (Myanmar) and Madagascar are renowned for their deep, saturated blues. Natural, untreated sapphires with even color and good clarity are highly sought after by both collectors and astrologers.
